Reading & Collection Development

  • Megan M.: Work directly with a teacher who brings her class to the library for book talks. 5 students are given mp3 players with audio versions of books from Denver Public Library. Matches physical book with audio. Very successful with students on the cusp. Wrote a grant to get more mp3 players. Uses Overdrive software.
  • Susan: Uses device that allows multiple access to one mp3 file so that 5 kids can access audio version at the same time Belkin Rockstar 5 way Headphone Splitter
  • For fluency, take book from libravox or project Gutenberg (p. Use public domain), kids read orally and make a podcast. Uses Garage Brand. Create beautifully read podcast collections
  • 7th and 8th grade teachers come to library. Kids use index cards - list reading goals, favorite books. Kids keep reading lists - those are tallied, kind of a contest between classes. Classes share.
  • Movie tickets for kids who participate in book trivia contests
  • Use of Kindles - can register multiple kindles with school account http://www.edukindle.com/
  • Netvibes: RSS feed aggregation - can publish public page that can be linked to library website or blog Example: Newz4U
  • Portal all web 2.0 resources from Library website or blog
http://east.mesa.k12.co.us/library/
  • Good Journal for Tweens?
  • How to get kids in to the library after orientation? Have to be an outreach library. Separate check-out and research.
  • Favorite Databases: Worldbook Online, Ebsco CultureGrams
  • Important to partner with Public Library - Possibility of sharing databases

  • Educate teachers to be able to use internet effectively
  • Send out a website and ask staff to give opinion - quiz of the day, online surveymonkey eval at the end of PD
  • 'Tech tip' emails
